Conditions we Treat
Effective Allergy and Immunology Care You Can Trust
We treat many allergy conditions, including the following.
Seasonal and year round allergies to airborne allergens can prevent you from doing the things that you want. Symptoms can be daily runny nose, sneezing, rashes, itchy eyes and trouble breathing. Testing for allergens such as pollens, dust mites, pets and molds can be performed in as little as 15 minutes. Scratch testing involves small scratches of the top layer of skin which trigger our immune system to show a small reaction if you are allergic. This testing is best performed if you can be off all antihistamines for 5 days prior to the procedure. Can’t stop your antihistamine? Not a problem. We can do blood work for most inhalant allergies as an alternative. Blood work takes ~3-5 days to give results but is not affected by your medications. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Porter today to discuss what allergy testing is right for you or your loved one. Once your inhalant allergies are determined, Dr. Porter will work with you to determine the best course of management for you and your busy life. The impact of allergies on our lives changes with time. Dr Porter is here to assist you as life (and your allergies) change over time.
Food allergies can cause severe symptoms such as throat swelling, hives, trouble breathing, vomiting and drop in blood pressure. Living with food allergies can make even routine activities difficult due to fear of accidental exposure. The most common food allergies in the USA include peanuts, tree nuts (almond, cashew, hazelnuts, walnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, and pistachios) milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and sesame. Determining the foods you are truly allergic to can help empower you to take control of your food allergies and lessen their impact on your life. Dr. Porter can also help to determine if newly emerging treatment options are right for you or your loved one.
Asthma can cause chronic symptoms of cough, wheeze, trouble breathing, night time wakening, exercise intolerance and chest tightness. Asthma diagnosis and management begins with testing to look at your lung function as well as inflammation. These tests can be performed at your consultation with Dr. Porter. In addition, often allergy exposure can flare asthma symptoms. Determining the factors that contribute to your asthma can help gain control of your symptoms. If needed, allergy testing can be performed at your consultation to help determine a plan to control your asthma. Inhaler management, biological therapy, immunotherapy can be discussed and initiated if you and Dr. Porter feel is necessary.
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic, inflammatory condition of the skin due to defective skin barrier. Symptoms can include daily itching, burning, skin breakdown, infection and change in pigment. Management includes restoring the normal barrier to the skin, reducing the inflammatory reaction of the skin and decreasing the chronic itch associated with it. This can be achieved with a daily skin care regimen, medications and biological therapy.
Hives are raised, itchy wheals on the skin that can represent an allergic reaction or an immune response to infection and other stresses to the body. Management can include allergy testing, blood work, medications and biological therapy.
Angioedema can be soft tissue swelling as a result of an allergic reaction, medication reaction or a genetic disorder such as Hereditary Angioedema (HAE). Allergy testing and blood work can help to determine the source as well as the best management to prevent reoccurrence.
Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin reaction in response to allergens coming into contact with your skin. This can be a result of our personal care products, occupational exposures, outdoor exposures among others. Testing can help you stop your exposure and get your rashes under control.
Allergy testing to medications such as penicillin, amoxicillin and other antibiotics can help determine if you have outgrown a lifelong medication allergy. Testing can include skin testing or just a graded oral challenge. Schedule a consultation to discuss your history and options today.
Stings to insects such as hornets, wasps, yellow jackets and honey bees can cause life threatening anaphylaxis. If you enjoy activities outdoors but live in fear of bee stings, get tested today and determine if venom immunotherapy (VIT) is right for you. Venom immunotherapy is an option for patients who have experienced immediate, full body symptoms of anaphylaxis following a sting. VIT is a series of shots lasting 3-5 years which can reduce your risk of anaphylaxis with subsequent stings by over 90%.
Errors with your immune system can cause recurrent infections such as sinusitis, pneumonia, skin infections, etc. Testing of your immune system involves blood work to look at antibody production, response to previous infections and vaccines, as well as immune response to stimuli. This work up can be performed as part of a consultation with Dr. Porter.
EOE is an inflammatory condition of the esophagus causing trouble swallowing, food impaction, vomiting, reflux and chest pressure. Dr. Porter can be an integral part of your testing and management of your EOE.
